By Dorcus Murungi

Bunyangabu District has been asked to encourage the residents to embrace family planning methods as a population control measure.

During a discussion between District Officials and a team from Marie Stopes Uganda, it was discovered that there is a poor uptake of sexual and reproductive health information and contraception by sexually active adolescents and high rates of teenage pregnancy.

It was also discovered that the poverty levels in the District is largely attributed to the failure of couples to embrace Family planning methods.

According to Honorable John Manume the Vice Chairperson LCV Bunyangabu, there is need for sensitization of the community about the usage of family planning methods so that they can embrace them.

Honorable Manume said that there is a lot of resistance from religious and cultural leaders in regards to family planning uptake a reason why a majority of the population are still adamant.

According to representatives from Marie stopes Uganda, Bunyangabu District needs to invest in family planning to reduce rates of maternal mortality, to reduce the number of abortions, to prevent sexually transmitted infections and to have families that they can effectively take care of among other advantages.
