The ongoing rehabilitation of the Mitandi-Kinyankende Market Access Road in Kyamukube Town Council has brought renewed hope to residents, who say the improved road will boost their household incomes and access to essential services.
Funded by the Islamic Development Bank under the Local Economic Growth Support (LEGS) project, the road works are being implemented at a cost of UGX 436.8 million. The project, which began in September last year, is now 90% complete, according to the Bunyangabu District Engineer, Mr. Samuel Nyaruhuma.
Spanning 4 kilometers, the upgraded road connects the villages of Kiboota, Mitandi, Kinyankende, and Mabwe Trading Centre. Mr. Nyaruhuma noted that the project’s scope includes the excavation of previously impassable rocky terrain, road formation, gravelling, compaction, installation of culverts, backfilling, construction of culvert ends, and the planting of trees along the route.
Residents are already feeling the impact of the improved infrastructure. Muleju Enock, a resident of Mitandi, said the rehabilitated road has not only eased access to markets but also improved connectivity to health centers and schools within the town council.
Hon. Amon Rutenta, the Secretary for Works, Production and Natural Resources, commended the community for their cooperation and urged them to maintain the road responsibly.
“We call upon all residents to protect this investment by avoiding actions that could damage the road, such as blocking drainages or dumping garbage,” Rutenta said.
The Mitandi-Kinyankende road is one of several infrastructure projects under the LEGS initiative aimed at enhancing market access and stimulating local economic development in rural areas of Uganda.
