Bunyangabu District on Monday celebrated Water Day 2025 at Bukorakole Ground in Buheesi Sub County, with calls for improved sanitation practices in homes and communities.
Speaking as the chief guest, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Bunyangabu, Mr. Nicholas Kamukama, urged parents to be role models in promoting hygiene and sanitation.
"Children are born with a blank mind. What they see is what they learn. Ensure you do the right things which they can copy and replicate in their lives," Mr. Kamukama emphasized.
The district water engineer, Mr. Robert Aheebwa, explained that Buheesi Sub County was chosen for the celebrations due to the ongoing sanitation campaign launched in December last year. He further revealed that plans were underway to establish a gravity flow scheme in the sub-county but encouraged residents to be cooperative.
“We need the community to willingly offer land for the water pipes and embrace paying water user fees to ensure sustainability,” he noted.
Representing the District LCV Chairperson, Mr. Amon Rutenta commended Buheesi residents for their increasing commitment to sanitation campaigns. However, he warned that those who remained reluctant to improve hygiene standards would face legal consequences.
As part of the celebrations, outstanding community members who demonstrated excellence in home sanitation were recognized and awarded plastic water tanks, jerrycans, basins, soap, and other essential sanitation items.
The Assistant Water Officer, Ms. Sarah Kobusinge, stated that the awards were aimed at motivating others to follow suit. "We want every household to take sanitation seriously and ensure proper hygiene practices for their families," she said.
The event was held under the theme: Sanitation for Dignity and Inclusiveness. The day served as a reminder of the critical role water and sanitation play in ensuring healthy and dignified living conditions for all.
The district leadership reaffirmed its commitment to promoting access to clean water and improved sanitation facilities, encouraging communities to embrace best practices for a healthier future.
World Water Day, held on 22 March every year since 1993, is an annual United Nations Observance focusing on the importance of fresh water. It is about taking action to tackle the global water crisis. A core focus of World Water Day is to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.
