The long-awaited rehabilitation of the Nyamiseke–Mahoma Road is underway, sparking renewed optimism among residents of Nyamiseke, Katika, and Mahoma, who have for years grappled with a deteriorated road that hampered transport, trade, and access to vital services.
Measuring 5.4 kilometers, the road is being rehabilitated under the Local Economic Growth Support (LEGS) project, funded by the Islamic Development Bank at a cost of Shs 298.2 million. The project is aimed at enhancing rural connectivity and boosting local economic activity by improving infrastructure in underserved areas.
According to the Bunyangabu District Engineer, Mr. Sam Nyaruhuma, significant progress has already been made on the project. “We have completed several key activities including reestablishment of the road alignment, clearing of the site—removing trees, stumps, and boulders—opening of the drainage system, reshaping the existing road, compaction, and gravelling,” he said.
The scope of works includes site preparation, site clearance, earthworks, drainage works, gravelling, and the final completion phase. These interventions are expected to ensure that the road remains usable even during rainy seasons, a time when residents have historically been cut off due impassable conditions.
For many residents, the project is more than just a road—it is a lifeline. Bright Vincent, a farmer in Nyamiseke, recounted the difficulties they previously faced in accessing markets. “This road had become almost unusable. During the rainy season, it was a nightmare trying to transport our produce to Nyamiseke Market. We incurred losses because vehicles couldn’t come here and buyers wouldn’t dare,” he said. “Now with this new road, we have a reason to believe our fortunes will change.”
For parents like Evelyn Namara, the rehabilitated road will mean safer and quicker journeys to school and health centers. “Our children walk long distances to school, and when it rained, they either got late or didn’t go at all. Even expectant mothers struggled to reach health facilities. This road will improve our lives in many ways,” she said.
The Nyamiseke–Mahoma Road is a key connector in the sub-county, linking farming communities to local markets, health centers, and educational institutions. Local leaders say the project fits into the broader development agenda of the district, which is focused on improving rural infrastructure to stimulate economic growth.
The District Chairperson, Mr James Ategeka Mugarama, in a recent inspection of the site, commended the engineering team and contractors for adhering to quality standards and maintaining good progress. He emphasized the district's commitment to ensuring that public investments translate into tangible benefits for the people.
Once completed, the road is expected to improve the mobility across Nyamiseke, Katika, and Mahoma, while boosting agricultural productivity through easier access to markets.
The LEGS project continues to be a key driver in Uganda’s rural development, with several other roads in Bunyangabu and across the country undergoing similar upgrades to unlock economic potential in remote communities.
As work on the Nyamiseke–Mahoma Road nears completion, local residents can look forward to smoother rides, better business opportunities, and improved access to services—a transformation that will have lasting impacts for years to come.
