Bunyangabu Leaders Launch Rehabilitation of Nyamiseke-Mahoma Market Access Road

Today, September 5, 2024, leaders of Bunyangabu District led by the Deputy RDC, Mr Robert Kamuntu, launched the rehabilitation of the Nyamiseke-Katika-Mahoma Market Access road in Kiyombya Sub County.

Measuring 5.4 km, the road is under the Local Economic Growth Support (LEGS) Project funded by the Islamic Development Bank (ISDB) to a tune of Shs 298 million shillings. It will stretch from Nyamiseke Trading Centre to Mahoma Bridge through Katika Village.

During the launch meeting, the Vice-chairperson LC III for Kiyombya, Francis Gonzaga, appreciated Bunyangabu District leadership for considering their road for rehabilitation. He said the farmers were struggling to access markets within and outside the Sub County and was optimistic that they would improve on their household incomes with the infrastructural development.

Christopher Musinguzi, the Male District Councillor for Kiyombya Sub County welcomed the project and pledged total political support and cooperation. He also urged the residents to be concerned and ensure the contractor does the work according to the plan that was shared with them by the District Engineer, Mr Sam Nyaruhuma.

For his part, Mr Nyaruhuma explained that the project scope includes grading, widening and shaping of the road, providing the required concrete pipe culverts, raising low spots on the road and the final gravelling.

The Project Contractor, Powerland, whom Eng Archangel Mugabe represented, assured the meeting that he would deliver the complete road even before the end of the approved six-month project duration.  He added that there was no component of compensation and asked the community members to be cooperative.

“We are also urged to employ casual laborers from the areas where we operate and we urge you people to come to us and we shall employ you once the project starts on Monday,” Mugabe said.

Hon James Ategeka, the Bunyangabu District LCV chairperson, told the community members that it has always been the desire of the district to ensure that areas like Kiyombya, which produce bananas and feed even the neighboring districts, get first-class gravel roads. He encouraged the residents to take advantage of the development and grow more food crops to generate income for their development needs.

In his remarks, Mr Kamuntu thanked the Government of Uganda under the leadership of His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for considering Bunyangabu people under the LEGS Project.

He asked the contractor to ensure his staff portray the highest levels of moral standards and avoid engaging in any illegalities during the course of the project.
