BUNYANGABU WASH TASK TEAM SET TO CREATE A WATER ROAD MAP
In a bid to enable access to clean and safe water, International Water and Sanitation Center (IRC) together with Bunyangabu District Local government has created a WASH Task Team. The WASH Task Team will support the achievement of the water, sanitation and hygiene-related targets of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). According to Mr. Martin Watsisi the Regional Coordinator IRC, the Wash Task Team of Bunyangabu will enhance capacity of the Wash Sector at the District and will be directly concerned with the availability and functionality of water, sanitation and hygiene. “The Team will ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. It will also provide a vision by giving this District a Wash road map,” he explained. He added that this Team will provide a platform for coordinating Local Government departments, CSOs and the Private Sector. Mr. Amon Rutenta the Secretary for Production, Works and Natural Resources commended IRC team for the good initiative. He noted that though the District is well endowed with various water sources, there is still a problem of water contamination which he believes will be solved by the water and sanitation team. “I pray that this team will help in sensitizing the communities about maintaining safe water points. A number of our people still contaminate our water sources by practices like open defection, washing and bathing from the water streams which bring about water borne diseases,” he said. According to Nathan Mugabe the Water Officer Bunyangabu District, the District has 75% access to safe water points currently and they hope to have a wider coverage.
